With a background in the hotel and restaurant industry, Adil Sequeira’s first business venture was a decent sized gas station. When he was ready to add to his portfolio, he looked for a well-known national brand with strong business potential, low competition in his market and fun and exciting products. He settled on Baskin-Robbins.
The advantages of purchasing an established Baskin-Robbins location were not lost on Adil. He says, “Having owed a business before, it just seemed the logical thing to buy an existing business at an existing location and build on to that existing business as all the systems are usually in place. It is easier to follow a tried pattern nowadays rather than reinvent the wheel or concept.”
He was able to take advantage of existing revenue streams, fully-equipped store and systems in place. “So much easier to add on to what is existing and build the business from there rather than start the business from scratch,”he claims.
For Adil, another key benefit of buying an existing business was funding. Since Adil could refer to with Profit & Loss statements, it was easier for him to raise the funds from the bank as they could easily estimate the loan repayments. In some cases, banks have an increasingly conservative attitude on lending and can better be swayed when financials are available.
According to Adil, Baskin-Robbins’ training and support was great and thorough from the start. Even though this wasn’t his first business venture, he says that the training covered all aspects for a franchisee who was entering into their first business. The support from the Baskin-Robbins’ OperationsManager as well as their training and marketing departments ensured Adil’s success. Within the brand’s franchisee network, Adil also found help and advice when he needed it – this he found quite unusual to other retail businesses.
Adil is passionate about the Baskin-Robbins core product: “Ice cream is a great product and BR’s is the best. The quality is consistently good. There are not many dessert places that have a simple menu that appeals to all age groups from very young to very old. The key difference is that Baskin Robbins not only offers a big selection of ice cream but also great ice cream cakes that can be customized for any age group, any gender and any occasion”.
There is no doubt in Adil’s mind that the key to being a successful franchisee is “Know the product you are selling” and put customers first. He believes in encouraging good staff interaction and trains his staff to that end.
Being a successful franchisee is not easy, but hard work and dedication will help place Adil in a position to enjoy what he does while growing a successful network with Baskin-Robbins.
